Darling I still can’t see why the human race must destroy one another

Happy Memorial Day.

I’d like to share this letter my grandfather wrote my grandmother during World War II. We grew up hearing stories of battles he was in, buddies he lost, and the “SOBs” they fought. I’m so glad that we have this written record of his thoughts and emotions, showing his tenderness in the midst of horrors, and an even more of the human side of the war.

France Dec. 9, 1944

Hello Darling,

I received your letter of Nov. 28th tonight. So far my mail is coming through pretty good, and honey don’t think for a minute that I am not glad. Those little things mean so much to us here. Also the air mail stamps are coming in just right. It is most thoughtful of you to send them that way, but honey do you remember how you sent the envelope paper and all when I was in the states? I think that would work just wonderful over here.

We have quite a time listening to and watching the people over here. They are so different and quaint looking. They are just like the story book pictures, wooden shoes and all. I could not believe my eyes at first. Things over here in many cases are 20 to 25 years behind the times. Most families have a flock of geese, rabbits, a few chickens and use oxen for draft animals instead of horses or mules. After seeing how these people live over here it is almost unbelievable. The farms are very small and some of them are so steep that I don’t see how they keep from falling out of them.

I am getting a good start on the medals, but honey I don’t care about them. I only want to come back in one piece and in my right mind. I received the Purple Heart medal by being in the wrong place at the right time and getting a slight wound from mortar fire and today I received the Bronze Star Medal which is supposed to be given for meritorious achievement in operations against the enemy. But truly speaking honey I don’t think I deserved this medal and had rather not received it for that reason. Well anyway they make a good show. You can show them to your friends and throw out your chest (haha).

Darling I still can’t see why the human race must destroy one another as we are doing in this war. I am not weakening by any means but just expressing my thoughts. It is a shame that we must destroy each other, but I am convinced it is the only way now, so I hope we go all the way.

Well darling I must close as the candle is about out. Kiss Don for his Daddy and may the Lord care for both of you until my return. Love and caresses for the dearest family of all.

Love,
Alva”

Geneva and Alva Curry, 1943

I take away something new every time I read this letter. But I’m most struck by the line I’ve made the headline of this post. Today I’m thinking about everyone who has fought, and those who died, for righteous causes. My grandfather was one of the lucky ones who came home, but the war took its toll. Thank you all for your sacrifices.
